Watership down.

There he was, quite tiny, feasting on clover in the bright spring sun. I was able to get up quite close to observe him.

"A foraging wild creature, intent above all upon survival, is as strong as the grass."

Richard Adams Watership down.

He suddenly sensed my presence and in a instant had disappeared into a hole under the concrete steps of the ugly campus building.

I would feel privileged to be able to watch him, to take his photo, to tell his story to my daughter on arriving home.

I walked over to my car, and stopped an instant to look at the blackened, decomposed corpse of a larger rabbit.

It's astonishing how memories from long ago spring up in ones mind.

I remember roaming freely in the field next to the rectory, to play with the hay bales, to lie in the sun and to watch the clouds tell me stories.

Cowslip's warren.

I remember being read the story of "Watership down." by Richard Adams at bedtime.

I am seeing  it with new eyes today.

There is a passage in particular which comes back to me.

It appears that anonymous authors have generously shared it in synthesised form in Wikipedia.

What a marvellous luck we have to live in the age of easy access to information, the internet!

Cowslip: Although he is not a Chief Rabbit, his strange warren is usually referred to as "Cowslip's Warren" because he is the first resident therein that Hazel's rabbits meet. Cowslip is laconic and almost too refined, with great size and a strange scent, perhaps from a life of superior food, and he seems typical of his fellows. As Fiver soon discovers, a farmer leaves vegetables out so that he can trap rabbits coming and going, but this is a severely taboo subject in the warren, and Cowslip and his fellows refuse to talk about it, and instead pretend that all is well. Cowslip later refuses to help or even acknowledge Bigwig, when he is trapped and nearly killed by the farmer's snare. When Holly, Bluebell, and Pimpernel later happen into the area, Cowslip leads an attack upon these last surviving Sandleforders. However, while the locals have remarkable cultural sophistication (even art), they are woefully unskilled at fighting, and succeed in killing only the sickened Pimpernel. His warren—a harvesting ground of rabbit meat for a human—goes down in lapine history as being "bewitched"

It suddenly occurred to me that we, open educators, are residents of Cowslip's warren, for if we have remarkable cultural sophistication, even art, we are woefully unskilled at fighting for our freedom.

We have become laconic, of great size, perhaps from a life of superior food.

I remember all of this having thought about Chris Gilliard's wonderfully succinct provocation at OER17 for a discussion session, featured in Jim Luke's blog post: "Open Ed, Trump, Brexit, the #Trexit discussion"

In some edtech circles and adjoining expo halls such critical questions are to be avoided.

"As Fiver soon discovers, a farmer leaves vegetables out so that he can trap rabbits coming and going, but this is a severely taboo subject in the warren, and Cowslip and his fellows refuse to talk about it, and instead pretend that all is well."

Domesday book.

On watching Chris's video, I went and did a Google search for "Digital Serfdom" (as one does).

I found a really interesting article about the transition from feudalism to capitalism, it talks of the Domesday Book, a census of every man, woman and beast made to control the newly conquered kingdom by the Norman, Guillaume Le Bâtard, known in English as William the conqueror.

Ironic really that a conqueror might be remembered as a bastard after all these years....

There were images which immediately connected with the idea of OPEN.

One of the British government's GCHQ (Government communications head quarters) which is a circular building recalled images I had seen of the new flying saucer shaped Apple Park.

There is something inescapably totalitarian about circles, about globes.

I went and played with the images.

Open world.

I couldn't but notice that put together the GCHQ and the Apple park building become 00 eyes.

Take away the O o o from OPEN and you have a PEN.

Take away the O o o from Facebook messenger and you have a PEN.

What was capitalism grounded in if it were not enclosure?

What was public commons became enclosed by farmers for sheep grazing to sell wOOl?

Feudalism gave way to local capitalism, with a rise in the power of merchants, global adventurers, the slave trade, colonialism, whole countries, and peoples were enclosed, this brought in wealth to drive industrialisation and a rise in a middle class - people such as I.

Opening borders, boundaries, free movement of capital, free movement of labour, technological revolution was only ever about opening the playground for the elite and their lackeys - people such as I.

Freedom of movement was never really free for the poor, they were only of interest in times of economic need as chattel or worse.

We had a brief renaissance of hope after two world wars, with a new deal.

With the collapse of Western economies post 2008, the party really was over for many people.

Take away the O o o from Obama's presidency and you get a increase in drone warfare, Wall street profits, and government/private corporative surveillance.

From New Deal to Art of the Deal.

Fuck the "New deal" now we have the fucking "Art of the Deal".

In this age of casino capitalism Trump has gone from fucking Atlantic city over with his fucking Taj Mahal to fucking the country over with his White House.

There is now no difference between corporative surveillance and government surveillance (if there ever really was).

We have opened up our friendships, our interests, our relationships, our movements, our homes, our schools, our universities, our cars, our lives, our dreams, and fears to Google, to Amazon, to Facebook, to the GCHQ, to the NSA.

Our lives, our bodies, our souls, have been enclosed in the name of corporate gain.

Open is open only in name.

Open is and perhaps always was a story of enclosure.

We play at being fascists gazing proudly at our Tweetmaps.

Aren't we making proper Charlies of ourselves?

With the death of a middle class, our enclosure threatens this time to be total.

Domesday codes.

This time we have Trump the bastard with his hands on the Domesday code.

I don't see much fucking difference between 1066 and 2016.

Democratic "freedom" was a historical anomaly.

Welcome to Cowslip's warren.

Being caught in snares is fatal.

Burrow deeper.

Unburrowing ourselves.

How do we dig ourselves out of the burrow we are digging for ourselves?

Please leave your droppings in comments.

I search for inspiration in Watership Down.

"Before such people can act together, a kind of telepathic feeling has to flow through them and ripen to the point when they all know that they are ready to begin. Anyone who has seen the martins and swallows in September, assembling on the telephone wires, twittering, making short flights singly and in groups over the open, stubbly fields, returning to form longer and even longer lines above the yellowing verges of the lanes-the hundreds of individual birds merging and blending, in a mounting excitement, into swarms, and these swarms coming loosely and untidily together to create a great, unorganized flock, thick at the centre and ragged at the edges, which breaks and re-forms continually like clouds or waves-until that moment when the greater part (but not all) of them know that the time has come: they are off, and have begun once more that great southward flight which many will not survive; anyone seeing this has seen at the work the current that flows (among creatures who think of themselves primarily as part of a group and only secondarily, if at all, as individuals) to fuse them together and impel them into action without conscious thought or will: has seen at work the angel which drove the First Crusade into Antioch and drives the lemmings into the sea.”

Zootopia?

I was rather looking forward to coming up eye to eye with the king of the jungle.

My mother had done the pre-lion build-up on the trip to Blackpool Tower Zoo.

"You'll see they even have a lion!"

I was, it had to be admitted, a little apprehensive about being in the same space as a real lion.

After all, he did have the means to  rip me to pieces with his bare paws.

A six-year-old human would be no match for a real lion.

Sensory deprivation

I was disappointed at the pitiful lethargy of the giant cat.

He was slumped in a cage.

He looked gloomily around, yawning with a glazed look of prolonged sensory deprivation.

All roaming was limited to uncomfortable shifting of cramped up limbs.

If he had been stuffed, with a roar on cassette loop, I might have been more impressed.

I was left with a sensation of intense sadness.

Zootopia.

Yes this was much better.

The owners of the progressive zoo had imagined animal heaven.

Lions were free to roam.

Trees, long grass, contoured, landscaped, enclosure gave a quasi-naturalistic impression of 'wild-life'. (or at least a quasi-naturalistic environment in the Warwickshire countryside.)

The animals seemed much better kept,  they could even stretch their legs, and bound around.

Hunting, of course, was unnecessary as the keepers kept all the animals healthy with carefully measured, scientifically designed diets.

Clever people, are scientists.

Breeding programs were a success.

In some enclosures, animals of different species were even mixed.

We could see zebra with zebu, and the odd antelope.

Marvellous how animals of such diverse species could manage to live in harmony for the tourists' greater pleasure.

Perhaps the animals were happy to make new exotic friends.

I am not sure if animals make friends.

We were mightily impressed at the great efforts made to educate children.

We  learnt how the zoo was responsible for preserving endangered species.

Out in the wild in Africa, the locals were often inhumane poachers.

Thank God for the World Wild Life Fund!

The Panda was doing a marvellous job in the preservation of African biodiversity.

Educational program

I would like to imagine that in the future our children will look at the enclosures in which past generations were kept as absurd anachrosnism.

They will be shocked at the controlled diets.

Out of Africa

I was brought up with stories of discovery, of adventurers.

There have been moments in my life when I have looked on at my peers with astonishment.

Whatever happened to grand narrative?

I was shocked that on finishing university, a large number of my fellow 'students' appeared to have their lives mapped out.

They had apparently been studying to get what was called 'a good job'.

What the hell was 'a good job'?

History degrees were apparently perfect preparation for young people to become accountants.

What the hell was an accountant?

I dreamt of adventure.

I met a 'successful' brand manager while working (playing) in Public Relations.

"I hate my job," he told me, "but it's too late now, with the mortgage and all."

He would never perhaps learn of his true nature.

He had become too dependent on his comfort.

He left me with a sensation of intense sadness.

#key

Europe 1

cue jingle.

JINGLE

WARNING!!
the following copy and paste is in #FRENCH (yikes) and a bit small to read:

So for those of you who don't follow instruction, here is a brief summary of the aforewritten veritable facts:

Robber robs 16 shops while wearing a criminal #tag.

Conclusion;

if you want to deter a robber from robbing, the scary idea of being followed around Paris by the Pink Panther sitting in front of his sophisticated control panel ain't working.

What went wrong?

Hypotheses:

  • Was Pink asleep each time the suspect was doing his business?
  • Was Rob using sophisticated microwave blocking device?
  • Does Pink have a prostate problem which he is finding hard to admit to?
  • Does Pink listen too much to Europe 1 on the radio and ignore Rob?
  • Does Pink get paid by Rob?

We shall never know.

Crimewatch didn't investigate.

Meanwhile in the 'Justice Ministry' they're looking at their budgets and tearing their hair out.

Too much crime, too many criminals, too much too young...

Violent crime is on the rise in France.
(Oh GAWD! )

Solution:

Build more prisons.

The problem with prisons is that young offenders who have been sciving school to rob banks, to pay for their dope and Call of Duty fee get the privilege of going to a proper and rather pricy finishing school, called #detention centre.

Brilliant!

Come to #detention centre, you get to meet a selected community of practice (#COP) who will simultaneously alienate you for ever from 'normal society' and give you an apprenticeship in more advanced crime!

For Reference - watch The Prophet (it ain't me)

Meanwhile...
back at 'normal' school, teachers and kids are being put in well-designed 'educational boxes' (classrooms, schools), banned from using their mobile phones, social media, watching tv, and told off for looking out of the window or chatting with their mates about their Kill percentage on Call of Duty.

Scandalous!

If you ask me they should increase sensory deprivation and take the solitary confinement (one teacher one classroom) further.

That will stop them imagining, creating, cooperating, innovating, and generally limit all spread of dangerous sedition exemplified by the idea that in a connected world perhaps the idea of shutting up kids in a box for 8 hours a day isn't perhaps the only concept of education imaginable.

Stop and think for a moment.

How would you stop innovation in pedagogy, revolution in China, or kids playing Candy crush in class? Go on, go on... so?

No ideas?

OK, here's mine:  You stop people talking to each other, you wear them out so they don't want to speak to other people and basically you try to follow them around while limiting their movement when they go off in the wrong direction.

Bells, rollcalls, clothes restrictions, timetables, sport, uniforms, threats, rewards (limited) monitors....

Problem.

Government has less money to follow people around and shut them up in boxes.

Solution

Private entreprise see opportunity in following tagged people around, selling the data to other corporations, shutting them in boxes for the....government?

Question.
How do people get to be in the government?
They have to raise funds....from? (I have no idea, just asking)

I digress...

So enclosure is for bad people?

You ARE PUNNISHED if you are confined in a box.

You are threatened by being sent to...Coventry (no one speaks to you, or you don't understand the accent)

Or if you are really bad (Denis Rodman - he is so bad - he chose to go) you get sent to.... NORTH KOREA,  where they will force you to clap a fat man with an uncool haircut and a mania for serial murder. (scared?)

WARNING BOMBS!

Enclosure is for rich people?

They have a problem at the moment, the French government....

Valerie spilled the beans after being serially-jilted.

Merci pour tout, she said - I am sure I detect irony.

No, I am talking about much less serious things...er immigrants. (scary African immigrants, or Afghan, Syrian, (#terrorist) or er the rest.)

The serious things....the immigrant issue is unsolvable....

Rihanna?

No, not Rihanna. You are getting distracted. Stop, read again what I was saying.

So we must post more guards around our borders protected with barbed wire fencing and scary dogs.

If they don't have enough dogs they could perhaps try #decoy barking over loudspeakers.

I digress.
So they up there (God) are having difficulties with all the things, the people, the lack of dogs, the lack of North Koreas, the lack of #terrorists  to make you sufficiently scared to want to be in prison or rewards to make you build your own fenced condominium (er behind borders/bars etc).

We need jobs, or a new version of CALL of DUTY to keep the kids off the streets.  (scared yet?)

Whatever.

The corporations who do Call of duty and prisons and fences and dog collars are happy, their investors sound.

Bully for them.

What about school?

Well might I be so criminal to suggest that it might need a revamp?

Keeping people in boxes all day is after all expensive.

Prison warders Teachers etc are pricy...they tend to go off on a tangent when you up there have organised a carefully researched educational 'path'.  (Fiddlesticks! They are not working how they should???darn! Back to the lab. Where's that inspector when you need him? PINK? PINK?)

We could replace humans with R4DE (robot) or the unpopular amphitheatre drone with a MOOC (x) from Harvard.

Researchers are working on that one.

I digress.

If we want to reimagine education, maybe we should start with a blank sheet of paper.

Questions:

Why do we put 1 person in a box with teenagers playing on banned smartphones?

Why do we try to enclose a Network?

Why are we scared of technology which offers us Wikipedia?

Why are we still thinking in terms of classrooms, regions, and countries when Amazon and Google don't?

Why do we believe in democracy when the rich are getting richer, the poor poorer, the wars uglier, the forests enclosed, exploited, the things we find (resources - people we do/don't care about) destroyed?

Have these people got the foggiest idea of what the f*** they are doing? (Yes, I know... don't answer that)

Proposal

We start thinking and educating ourselves in terms of complexity of networks, of chosen tags (or no tags), of emergence, of freedom of association, of respect for diversity, of free movement of ideas, creativity, innovation, justice, empathy, understanding, civic responsibility, planetary responsibility....

Please add your tag....your thoughts, your music, you pictures, your words, in the language and form of your choice on the blank page  here
(Should you wish. I have no means of enforcing this. This is not for credit/debt/cash)

#Key proposals for sustainable education

I have said my peace for now.

I can go back to bed and sleep.
