I am up too early in the morning, juggling
in my head.
This is what researching complexity does to you - you find yourself with two many balls spinning around in your brain.
Fuck it.
I dropped an F word.
I have diminished responsibility.
Sorry.
Some of those balls have been thrown into the air by others.
Stop it, stop it, bloody stop it.
There it is.
I dropped a B word.
It's your fault.
There are too many of them now.
All at once.
Damn.
I dropped a D word.
I keep trying, but I need to practice more to keep it up.
"Cheers."
Damn that Nietzshe.
What was it Sarah was saying the other day?
She had dream dialogues with a dead German philosopher.
Well as long as he left her to sleep and he didn't wake her up.
I am beyond dreaming.
I am regretfully awake.
At half past four in the morning.
I woke up to go and paste the juggling photo on a conference presentation.
That's what was keeping me up.
Up till midnight transcribing a conversation with a young teacher in a bar.
What was it that he said at the beginning of the dialogue?
"Cheers."
Then the conversation went on for another fifty two minutes.
"Cheers."
I have done eleven minutes of transcription.
It took me an hour.
"Cheers."
So here I am.
I have all these bloody balls in my head.
Some of them are nodes on networks - people, stories, discourses, smartphones, classrooms.
Others are spread out over time.
Others you need a zoom lens to see and study.
I have turned into some sort of biologist with a microscope.
I have turned into some sort of naturalist in a hide listening to bird song, watching a fox, watching an owl, watching a boar eating acorns, watching me, watching me.
I keep my head low, I wear camouflage for fear that I will disturb the wildlife.
Is this my bloody hide?
It will get me skinned.
Touches of sense?
Touches of madness rather.
It was Waldrop that set it off.
Well he dropped a bloody ball.
Well God...you have to blame somebody.
And muggins here picked it up.
And now it's spinning around in my head.
At dawn.
At.
At.
"The edge of chaos, the constantly shifting battle zone between stagnation and anarchy, the one place where a complex system can be spontaneous, adaptive and alive."
Mitchell Waldrop.
That's where I find myself at four forty eight in the morning.
At the edge of chaos.
I size it up.
I keep my eye on the ball.
I am clearly alive.
This is spontaneous.
I suppose this is some sort of adaptive action.
I am alive.
But uncomfortably awake.
But, Mitchell did say "battle zone"...
Desperation.
November 13th 2015.
Some die.
I am missing them.
I am missing them.
I am missing my friends out there.
In no particular order.
They keep popping up in my head.
Where's that juggling gif that I made?
There it is.
I thought it would come in some day.
It's a bit rough.
It will do.
Blimey, why did I choose those pictures?
I can't remember.
I am missing my friends out there.
In no particular order.
Terry, Kevin, Sarah, Wendy, Maha, Mia, Ken, Keith, Ron, Alan....uncle Tom Cobbley et al.
I could go on.
I'll be back.
Online....Offline, I have been juggling.
Incommunicado.
Concentrating on getting those balls up.
I have been juggling.
Stop throwing me bloody balls!
I already have too many.
I know they are juggling too.
My friends...that is.
I have been juggling.
But not here.
Not visibly.
I am juggling now.
On paper.
In my head.
Silently.
I am looking forward to having more play time.
No. I am looking forward to less solitary games.
Too many balls in my head.
I have been quiet quite a while.
The conference presentation is almost ready.
I am almost ready.
Learning on the edge of chaos...
Trying to map a route with/through complexity ain't easy.
It ain't easy.
It won't go in straight lines.
There are too many curve balls to catch.
Sod it.
That's my limit.
There's those students to throw a few balls to.
They can juggle too.
For me, for them, for you.
We all drop off eventually.
I am hoping this will help me drop off.
For an hour and forty minutes.
What was it that Nietzsche was saying?

Outward bound.
FOLLOW WITH CARE.
I can hear it in the telephone conversation.
"If you want me to go through the motions, to pay lip service, to fill in a few hours, I'd prefer to look elsewhere."
He didn't really know what I was doing.
He seemed surprised at my fougue.
I wanted it to be clear who I was, how we might meet, what I hoped.
He seemed receptive, he seemed excited with the new suggestions, and started planning ahead.
What might have been a wall which we had hit, or at least that I had hit, had crumbled.
New horizons opened up.
I took a deep breath, I scribbled some notes
I took the dog out for a walk, I felt the sun on my back.
It felt like a release.
It's what I have been reckoning: too many years being able to look out into the open have formed me.
I was brought up on the coast.
I was brought up climbing trees and looking over the wall.
I was brought up praying on my knees.
Was all that about looking up, looking beyond or kneeling down in submission?
I was never quite sure.
I wasn't happy with the submission.
Kneeling felt a sham.
The open sea.
Artists appear as lighthouses to navigate by.
I didn't realise then.
No horizons.
There are houses, there are towns, there are whole regions where I can not live nor dream.
I can not live without the possibility to look beyond, to feel the spray of the waves, to gaze over horizons.
I suppose that is freedom in my eyes.
Outward bound.
I place myself strategically, I look out, I contemplate.
I take my bearings.
I listen.
Unheard voices.
I found it later, those words that I wanted, after having been riddled with his fucking ideas.
SHOT.
“This is how it should be done: lodge yourself on a stratum, experiment with the opportunities it offers, find an advantageous place on it, find potential movements of deterritorialization, possible lines of flight, experience them, produce flow conjunctions here and there, try out continuums of intensities segment by segment, have a small plot of new land at all times.”
Gilles Deleuze
Fuck Deleuze.
I make notes.
I suppose this is a landmark (event)...this space...here.
I think to myself, all of this is out of order.
The writing I mean.
I don't care.
No that is not true.
I care.
Rhizomes, fucking rhizomes.
I was only a moment down at the bottom, and here I am trapped in the fucking middle.
I keep getting moved everywhichway, helterskelter.
Hold on.
STAND FIRM.
STAND YOUR GROUND.
How the fuck did that appear?
I don't know.
All at sea.
I follow the current.
Swimming against the tide is hopeless.
Where am I now?
Jumping from the sea into a bounded space, leaves me feeling safer.
I shall not drown.
I hold on. I hold fast.
Elements pop up invited (uninvited?) and leave me fuming.
I can't hear myself think let alone speak.
“Writing has nothing to do with meaning. It has to do with landsurveying and cartography, including the mapping of countries yet to come.”
― Gilles Deleuze
"Go away, go away."
The shame, the shame.
I take a few photos, to take note, to pay attention.
I give myself the respect no man deserves.
“The shame of being a man - is there any better reason to write?”
Gilles Deleuze
Would a woman fare better?
"Where the fuck is this going?"
"Look, I'm really sorry, I didn't want to bring bloody Deleuze along, but he insisted."
All at sea.
I can fear that you are lost....with me...and them.
"Yes, we are all fucked...sorry."
You will be my guide, my landmark, my event.
The open self.
I am for an instant unsure what constitutes "YOU".
I mean it isn't just "YOU".
It is this, it is I, er...a desire...
“The self is only a threshold, a door, a becoming between two multiplicities”
Gilles Deleuze, A Thousand Plateaus: Capitalism and Schizophrenia
I move into the open.
A coast, my eyes are not drawn to the cliffs, but to what lies beyond.
To what lies beyond.
To a movement, to an anticipation, to a trajectory.
I deliberately looked for a quote of Deleuze to help situate myself here now and I feel drawn to this idea, it refuses to let me put it anywhere else. Against my better judgement, I stick it here, it will be a cairn in this desert.
“A book has neither object nor subject; it is made of variously formed matters, and very different dates and speeds.”

Back to earth.
A view from my house, my eyes are not drawn to the tree, nor the wall, but what lies beyond.
Beyond, beyond, what was it that Deleuze was going on about?
What is this becoming?
“According to Beckett's or Kafka's law, there is immobility beyond movement: beyond standing up, there is sitting down, and beyond sitting down, lying down, beyond which one finally dissipates.”
― Gilles Deleuze, Francis Bacon: The Logic of Sensation
I get that view from my house, it is an anchor, a buoy, a mooring.
All at sea.
I feel myself lunging for a line.
Sea chaos swallows me up.
I see myself flailing under the surface, fighting for the light, for air.
Back to earth.
There it is that view from my house.
A place I can rest...home.
Footnote.
Fuck it, kids' art was never about depiction.
It is landscape mapping in paint.

Upside down artists.
I stop.
How will all this fit together?
I think of those TV artists who paint upside down with broad strokes.
Is this just a crude meaningless splash of paint on a canvas?
I join the audience struggling for the moment recognition.
I find myself swallowed up in a Warhole of my own making.
Another love story.
Then it reappears.
I found that photo.
A father is holding his baby.
LOVE.
HOPE.
The father is transfixed.
The babe in arms, is gazing beyond.
We have love, we have joy, we have life, we have anticipation, we have hope, we have sadness.
Nothing remains.
A photo lies.
A moment passes.
Preface to Outward Bound.
I fell upon a post of Suzan Koseoglu, thanks to Teresa Mackinnon who retweeted a tweet of Maha Bali.
— Suzan Koseoglu (@SuzanKoseoglu) May 16, 2017
It converged with a proposal for a journal "Learning in the Wild" (Teresa again), days of mapping, meetings online and here, reflection on landmark events (Maritta Riekki), autoethnography, frames, and this mess.
Little by little, I have learned to trust this my mess.
On first sight, it may be unfamiliar, that is how I deal with beyond.
This is how I learn in the open.
Here.
Convergence.
Even silence situates.
Silence especially situates.
I get that quote that Suzan shared.
"Space without boundaries in not space, it is a chaotic void, and in such a place no learning is likely to occur."
Peter J, Parker.
I note what Suzan writes:
"I"ve become open and stayed open (although intermittently) mainly because it's a learning space for me, and because learning is social, it's a social space for me too."
This space is (and here I refer to this post "Outward Bound - formerly titled Open bound")
"Bounded and open".
"Bounded by subject but open to interpretations and new directions of inquiry."
In writing here, I am honouring "the little stories" - my little stories...our little stories.
In reflecting here on autoethnography, academic discipline, and thesis, I am accepting bonds.
Bonds, he thinks suddenly, bond.
Freedom always includes bonds.
Freedom from language, from social bonds, from love, is chaos.
Multiple voices, distant voices.
I think for a moment of Schizophrenia, and multiple voices.
I think of hoarding, I think of trauma.
I think of making sense.
Is this blog, so full of voices, of others, of mine, bordering on the insane?
BIND ME.
TIE ME DOWN.
STRAIGHT JACKET.
STRAIGHT SUIT.
SWADDLED.
CODDLED.
SLAVE.
BABE.
MMM.
A babe vocalises.
A babe babbles.
BABBLE.
BABEL.
Aren't you following?
Forgive my fougue.
FOLLOW WITH CARE.
Therein lies a paradox.
CARE is not a bond.
I am sorry.
Don't worry, I'll just venture out a bit further.
I know this is inhospitable.
But take my hand.
It sometimes takes time, trust, contemplation to make sense of what appears chaos.
OK.
CHAOS.
MY CHAOS
My reason is perhaps inhospitable.
I am sorry.
If you will walk with me a while....
What is that word that Terry uses?
FELDGANG.
You will perhaps see the gravity beyond the cliff.
Safety blogs.
I return to Suzan's blog.
It feels, safe, somehow.
"The networked spaces, in particular Twitter and the blog you are reading, have become learning spaces for me, spaces that are organically designed around principles of paradox."
" - my blog is the most personal of all because it is a reflective medium and I write not as a gift but to think and to connect with others."
"...."
I stop and I could go on copy paste...copy paste.
I do.
A bit.
"The tensions between discursive identities (emergent, defined by relationships) we create in open spaces and our institutional identities might be one area we might focus on."
I stop myself.
I reason that I need discipline.
I need time.
I reason that I need to connect this mess here with those who are viewfinders, guides.
I suppose this is where, and this what I contemplate.
That is my thesis.
I write it to myself.
An anticipation of negation.
To better think for myself.
“Do not ask who I am and do not ask me to remain the same. More than one person, doubtless like me, writes in order to have no face.”
Fuck it, kids' art was never about depiction.
It is landscape mapping in paint.

Impermanence
We stretch out, we point, we cry, we crawl, we walk, we run, we embrace, we walk, we crawl, we stop.
We surround ourselves with objects: clothes, furnishings, company, weapons, words...
All is in movement, all is in movement.
We stop, we observe, we make connections, we note, we keep for ourselves, we keep for others...
What is monumental, what is iconic, what is sacred, what is mysterious, we worship.
We celebrate our exploits, our kills, our scrapes, our epics.
I am reminded of Mes Emmerdes and a living monument that is Charles Aznavour:
We aspire to meaning, to leaving a mark of our passing.
We are as leaves to the wind, ephemeral, dependent, soon to fall, soon to be raked up. I suddenly remember those Feuilles Mortes of Jacques Prévert.
Those feuilles mortes...
We are constantly looking to beauty to remind us of the height of our summer.
Those relics, which we embellish as the days shorten.
We are transfixed by those burnished images, fearing to look past a fixed mirror...
Can that really be us now?
What appears permanent, we hold onto desperately, a buoy in an ocean of alienation...
We stretch out, we stretch our for sure footing and to leave a mark, however futile, of our passing.
If I come to write all of this now, it is because I have some dirty secrets...
Behind these lines are the words of others, always the words of others....
Here are pages and pages of the words of others...
There was the writing of Kate Bowles.
I didn't search out her writing alone.
I followed the traces of someone I trust:
— Sean Michael Morris (@slamteacher) November 5, 2015
I have been immersed in the conversations of fellow travellers...
I did not discover Walter Ong alone, nor the recorded conversations of Socrates.
I did not start independently to reflect on the nature of books, on the nature of social media alone....
I have been overhearing the conversations of others, and I have reflected...
What is the nature of this writing...this digital writing?
I fell upon an article in a Facebook stream, shared by another that I trust, it reflected on the 'Decay of Twitter', so young and yet prematurely mourned.
http://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/2015/11/conversation-smoosh-twitter-decay/412867/
We are voracious culture vultures, swallowing icons, likes, kisses, quotes, beauty, terror, horror...
Such is our hunger for distraction.. from our own impermanence.
We erect statues:
Shakespeare, Leonardo, Gandhi, Callas, Churchill, Monroe...
We protect their higlighted 'memories'.
We prefer to see the objects of our worship thus:
Better dead young
The Lonesome genius.
The rebel with a cause.
The martyr with a stirring soundbite.
Our reality is less statuesque.
What is the nature of our worship of books?
We carefully prop up their memory with convenient authorship, with defenders of the faith...

Shakespeare.
Dylan.
Elliott.
We hold onto our myths, our stately lines as ships wreck...
We throw up our arms in ephemeral empathy before sinking into drunken stupour.
We find another icon, another golden calf to help in our distraction.
We take the moral high ground with fervour, I am not one of those, I am not one of those, those trolls.
We are above it all...
No we are not.
We are it all.

What a mess?
"L'inconscient est structuré comme un langage"
Lacan
"What a mess!" I have often heard these words addressed towards me...
They would perhaps be talking about my bedroom, my desk, my filing system.
Of course, for other people, this apparent disorder would be considered chaos.
They would be at a loss to find themselves in my 'mess' or should I say my 'order'.
They would be, however, mistaken to imagine that my learning was messy.
Similarly, some people might find this blog, or my way of posting images on social media or whatever messy.
They would be, however, mistaken to imagine that my learning was messy.
Others, might find that free association, brain-storming, creativity, abstract or conceptual art meaningless junk, or just a mess.
I would say that we have to learn to live with complexity, with what appears on first sight chaos.
We are nurtured to gradually deal with a certain amount of liveable uncertainty which is culturally determined.
In some cultures, and for some individuals, very little uncertainty is acceptable.
In such cultures, and for some individuals, learning is not at all messy, or uncertain; it is quite the opposite.
When we come across, for the first time, learning spaces or classrooms which are more freely ordered than traditional classrooms, we might think that they were 'messy.'
I would say that we have to be very careful to not imagine that introducing more 'freely ordered learning spaces' will inevitably result in more learning. It may well produce just the opposite effect.
(I am speaking from experience here.)
If I am writing this now, it is because I have been thinking through what Dave Cormier writes in his 'Practical guide for rhizo 15' where he says:
"I get the feeling that learning is a very messy place, and the story of the rhizome is one that i have found super useful in explaining things I’ve seen happen in learning spaces."
Well, I am not sure that we can say that learning is 'a place' messy or otherwise.
I suppose I might agree that learning can appear a 'messy process'. It certainly is a 'complex process'.
I suppose I might agree that learning can appear a 'messy process'. It certainly is a 'complex process'.
I am not convinced by the idea that learning is 'messy and uncertain.'
I would agree that without language, the world, and our lives, our relationships do indeed appear, are often, 'messy and uncertain' so from that sense what we will learn may indeed be 'messy and uncertain.'
However, I think that learning is really about make sense, putting some sort of acceptable (to us) order into our uncertain lives, onto this complex world.
We do this, as far as I understand it, in order to make it liveably legible and more comfortably predictable.
What is 'liveably legible' for me may well be 'unliveable chaos' for you.
So it can be argued that learning, being socially determined, can be seen from above or from outside as 'messy' and 'chaotic'.
We can also argue, with vehemence, that learning can not ultimately be 'managed' in a classroom.
We can try, as people in some cultures have done, to limit all unauthorised learning by using drastic punishments.
We can reward people for learning certain things or skills and thereby entice them to follow a certain predetermined pattern.
We can imagine the students are learning something but they may be learning nothing or something entirely different to what we imagine at a particular moment.
We cannot stop people thinking differently to how we would like them to think.
Social change, the learning within a society and the effect that it will have on that society is nonlinear, and unpredictable.
The pace and the means by which people will arrive to learn things or skills are varied, and complex.
I agree that learning is a 'deeply personal, individual process', or rather a 'deeply personal, social process.'
We wouldn't have survived so well as a species if individuals only learnt what was 'managed' by others.
No child left behind?
So for me, learning is ultimately about ordering 'mess'.
What we are going to learn as individuals or as a species is certainly uncertain, of that we can be certain.
Finally, what we perhaps all learn is one thing: we are together in 'this mess'.
This is our bed, we had better learn to live with it.

Shredding tears...
Nothing seemed to matter any more.
There was no light, there was not a glimmer of hope, there was no way out.
Confronted by the enormity of the events, he flailed around for a hold, a resting place, a ledge.
Nothing seemed to offer any respite from the prevailing gloom, from the pain.
Shredding tears...
He picked up a piece of paper.
He looked at its surface.
He took a pen.
He dragged out a line.
"In whose name?"
He looked at it.
There was no answer.
Nothing else followed.
He rewrote the line.
"In whose name?"
There was no answer.
Nothing else followed.
He...
He...
No, he couldn't even remember that bloody verb.
He tossed it into the bin.
He looked down at the bin.
It was full.
None of it made any sense.
He put down the pen.
Wrinkles and scars.
He looked down at his hands.
He studied the wrinkles.
He followed the scar on the palm of his left hand with his index finger.
Nobody could take away that scar.
Nobody would notice that scar.
Nobody would understand the intimacy of that scar.
What does it all mean?
Suddenly he noticed her.
He looked up to meet her eyes.
She spoke.
"I just wanted to say..."
"Please don't change..."
It wasn't really very much.
It was undeniably cryptic.
Even if she was the only one...
It was enough.
He could go on in that knowledge.

A pier.
Weathered board.
Rusted nail.
Corroded iron-wrought solidity.
Tread tentatively my friend.
We are alone.
We are offshore.
Chatter is swallowed by iodine laced wind.
'ffffshhhhhfffffshhhhffffffffffffshhhhhhhhffffff'
Come on make steps.
Lean into the gale.
"Walk the plank mate..."
It beckons you onwards.
Reluctantly you are drawn.
"Keep walking."
"Don't look down."
Don't look through the gaps.
However sure the deck...
The swirl of waves, the rising spray, the barnacle armed struts below, tell a tale.
"Man overboard!"
His skin is sliced by shell as he drowns appalled.
"Don't look down."
Don't look through the gaps.
Don't muse an instant.
Gulls slide windwards, angling down.
Gulls, stare blankly, calling ocean.
Come on make steps.
Lean into the gale.
A pier takes us only so far.
'ffffshhhhhfffffshhhhffffffffffffshhhhhhhhffffff'
Hold on fast now.
Gaze out with me a moment.
Blurring in grey water wash...we, sky, & wave are one.
'ffffshhhhhfffffshhhhffffffffffffshhhhhhhhffffff'

Standing on the sure...(tidings for @dogtrax #rhizo14)
We are on well tread ground,
Our words in huis clos.
We feel our art in static sound,
As page feeds furtive flow.
Notes drum our door waiting for attention.
Rhymes plumb our paths seeking some intention.
"Who my friend do these belong to?
You know not? I have no clue."
Disembodied verse clicks connection for a while,
Drawling pebble wash on my wall,
Coaxing rythmic chorus to recall.
Disenchanted text pitter patters without guile.
Standing solely on the sure...
Some signs may break your rolling stride,
As distant echoes lie chaotically aside.
Clasp our shells to your ear and listen to their roar.
